ASBMB HOPES award to promote STEM education in partnership with San Diego Global Vision Academy

Assistant Professor of Chemistry and Biochemistry Bob Dutnall and teachers Valentyna Banner, Aja Booker and Emily Vizzo from the San Diego Global Vision Academy (SDGVA) have received a Hands-on Opportunities to Promote Engagement in Science (HOPES) grant from the American Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology (ASBMB). This enables them to begin a partnership to provide hands-on classroom activities to middle school students to promote their understanding of molecular biology.

As part of the partnership, Dr. Dutnall and students from the Chemistry Club and the USD Chapter of the ASBMB Undergraduate Affiliate Network will visit SDGVA and engage students in hands-on activities to help them understand the structure of DNA and the processes that lead to the production of proteins. The grant will also allow middle school students from SDGVA to visit the Shiley Center for Science and Technology to engage with USD faculty and students and learn more about research and opportunities for education and careers in the STEM fields.
