James Bolender, Ph.D. and Students Assess Environmental Impact New Hospital in Uganda


Conceived as an archbishop’s dream and brought to life through the dedication of visionaries in San Diego, Holy Innocents Children’s Hospital is the only pediatric hospital in Uganda.

Since opening its doors in Mbarara on July 4, 2009, it has seen more than 500 children as outpatients, and cared for some 50 children in the inpatient wing. These numbers are a marvel in a region where — until now —one child in seven dies before reaching the age of 5.

In the summer of 2006, Archbishop Paul Bakyenga and the chancellor of his archdiocese shared his vision with parishioners of San Rafael Parish in Rancho Bernardo and with Anita Hunter, professor and director of the University of San Diego’s masters of science in nursing program. The archbishop’s request of these people was simple, says Hunter: “Can you help me save children?”
