Professor Martin Chalfie earned his PhD in Physiology from Harvard University in 1977. As a postdoctoral fellow, he conducted research with Sydney Brenner at Cambridge University where he began work with the nematode worm C. elegans that would eventually lead him to use Green Fluorescent Protein (GFP) as a marker for gene function. He employed GFP to investigate aspects of nerve cell development and function.

Professor Chalfie joined the faculty of Columbia University in New York in 1992. Currently, he serves as the William R. Kenan, Jr. Professor of Biological Sciences and is chair of the department of biological sciences. He has published more than 200 papers, and in 2008 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Chemistry along with Osamu Shimomura and Roger Y. Tsien “for the discovery and development of the green fluorescent protein, GFP.”
