How to Build an Animal: Evolution of Animal Developmental Genes and Morphology by William McGinnis, University of California, San Diego

Bill McGinnis, Ph.D., holds the Herbert Stern Chair in the section of Cell and Developmental Biology, UCSD, where he studies the function and evolution of key regulators of animal body construction known as the Hox genes.  While in the laboratory of Walter Gehring in Switzerland some 25 years ago, McGinnis was involved in the discovery of Hox genes and the homeotic gene complex in Drosophila.  The Hox genes have been called "the Rosetta Stone of developmental biology."
