Adjunct Assistant Professor
Ronald Shaheen serves as Adjunct Assistant Professor in the USD Music Department and has taught: Introduction to Music; Music in Society; History of Romantic Music; Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque Music; Classical, Romantic, and Modern Music; History of Opera; Aural and Keyboard Skills; Fundamentals of Music; Class Voice; and individual voice lessons. He also serves as the department’s Concert Manager, and he coordinates the Applied Music Program.
Dr. Shaheen received his Ph.D. from the University of California, Los Angeles in historical musicology. As a Fulbright scholar, Dr. Shaheen researched the operas of Johann Simon Mayr and early nineteenth-century Italian opera. He has penned articles on Mayr, book reviews, and articles to the New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians. He has presented papers in Chicago; New York; Ingolstadt, Germany; and Venice, Italy.
Scholarly and Creative Work
Dr. Shaheen teaches individual voice lessons both through the USD Music Department and privately. He has performed several roles with the UCLA Opera Theatre, and has sung on faculty recitals at USD. He has served as tenor soloist/section leader with several prominent churches in San Diego, including St. James by the Sea Episcopal Church, All Souls Episcopal Church, La Jolla United Methodist Church, and Christ Lutheran Church. As a board member of the San Diego Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing, Dr. Shaheen has been its president, its newsletter editor, and now sits on the board as past president.
Dr. Shaheen is a member of the American Musicological Society and the National Association of Teachers of Singing.
Dr. Shaheen has lectured on opera, music, and singing for cultural institutions throughout Southern California, including San Diego Opera, San Diego Symphony, La Jolla Music Society, Opera Pacific, and the San Diego Museum of Art.
