Perla Myers, PhD
Perla Myers has been a member of the Mathematics and Computer Science Department since 1999. She enjoys teaching classes at all undergraduate levels: core mathematics classes, mathematics classes for the Mathematics major, and mathematics classes for future and in-service elementary and secondary school teachers. Professor Myers’ most recent work involves the improvement of the mathematical education of teachers.
Professor Myers earned her Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from the University of Houston Honors Program, and her MA and PhD in Mathematics from the University of California, San Diego.
Scholarly and Creative Work
Perla Myers wrote her dissertation and some subsequent work in an area where Graph Theory and Number Theory intersect. Her most recent work is in the area of the mathematical education of teachers. She enjoyed collaborating with the Reuben H. Fleet Science Center and the Chula Vista and Lemon Grove School Districts through a venture that began with a California Mathematics and Science Partnership Grant.
Professor Myers teaches a variety of mathematics classes at USD. In all her classes, she focuses on helping students acquire skills that will enhance their independent learning capabilities. She received the Innovations in Experiential Education Award. She most appreciates teaching, learning and growing within the collegial and collaborative environment in the Mathematics and Computer Science Department.
