A New Era for Torero Career Success

The University of San Diego seeks an innovative, dynamic, and student-focused career professional to serve as Associate Director of the Career Development Center.  Reporting to the Center’s Senior Director, Robin Darmon, and a member of the Center’s executive leadership team, the Associate Director plays a vital role in the University’s emphasis on student success and authentic professional outcomes. USD’s bold Envisioning 2024 strategic plan lays out a framework to prepare leaders dedicated to ethical conduct and compassionate service, and the Career Development Center is a primary partner in the fulfillment of this plan.

The Associate Director plays an active role in a highly engaged and integrated organization that has experienced exponential growth in recent years. With a total center staff of 18, the Associate Director leads a team of 9 central and school-specific practitioners dedicated to individual and group engagement with students and alumni from the College of Arts and Sciences, School of Business, Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering, School of Leadership and Education Sciences, the Joan Kroc School of Peace Studies and Hahn School of Nursing.  Artfully renovated facilities and a unique service delivery model ensure both broad and deep career impact throughout the USD community.

Under the direction of Senior Director Darmon, the highly engaged Career Development Center team, called CDev, last summer completed a comprehensive new-era strategic plan to ensure ongoing dedicated support to students and alumni, propelled by a bold commitment to USD’s philosophy of a “Culture of Care,” and delivered through innovative, customized, and scalable programs and services.

Empowering Students Where They Are

In 2015 the Career Development Center moved into a beautifully remodeled space in Manchester Hall, a centrally located facility also housing the Office of Admissions.  The Manchester office boasts an impressive interview suite and teleconferencing space to allow students to reach outside the San Diego region for coaching, mentoring, interviews and other opportunities.  A “hub-and-spokes” strategy, where school-specific counselors are physically located in those schools' buildings, was developed to provide additional touch points for career counselors and students in the College of Arts and Sciences and the Schools of Business and Engineering.  

Co-curricular Impact

CDev worked closely with academic and staff colleagues in the School of Business to launch its highly successful Professional Development Passport Program, encouraging students to meet with counselors, attend networking events, and participate in career development educational workshops.  Of students who participated, 93% received their first job within three months of graduation.  Plans are underway for similar programs for engineering and liberal arts and sciences students.

  • Over 20,000 jobs and internships were posted on CDev’s new Handshake platform
  • CDev counselors conducted 3124 individual career counseling sessions with students and alumni
  • Over 1500 students attended flagship CDev events
  • 302 employers attended fairs and programs on campus
  • 1,107 additional employers received customized Torero Resume Books
  • 345 students attended 15 Torero Treks in 2016-17, destinations included: Los Angeles, New York, Seattle, and Silicon Valley/San Francisco
  • 700 seniors benefitted from free LinkedIn Premium accounts
  • 77% of USD students completed an internship or some form of high-impact experiential learning
  • CDev Student Career Ambassadors broadened the Center’s program reach by 61 events

About the Position

The Associate Director of USD’s Career Development Center will work collaboratively and strategically with the Senior Director to provide effective leadership, direction, and supervision of University of San Diego’s career development programs, services, and resources in order to help students and alumni develop and achieve career goals that lead to meaningful lives.  As a senior member of the Career Development Center’s management team, the Associate Director leads a team of career practitioners that deliver individual and group counseling and educational programs to all students with the exception of graduate business students and law students. The Associate Director also serves as the Center’s inclusion and equity lead, ensuring that career development offerings reach all students throughout the diverse Torero community.  Career readiness for all undergraduate students is a major focus at the University of San Diego, and this role will play a strategic role in supporting the development and implementation of these career readiness initiatives throughout the campus.
