Program Description

Our summer aquatic schedule includes four two-week sessions running from June 15 – August 6.  Lessons are taught Monday through Thursday of each week. Certified American Red Cross instructors teach swim lessons.  At USD, we maintain small class sizes (in some cases, only 3 students per instructor) to maximize the attention each student will receive.   This year, we will be offering a wide range of aquatic classes to meet all age levels, including: youth swim lessons (5 – 14 years old), tot swim lessons (3 – 5 years old), Junior Life Guarding, Adult Stroke Technique, and Master’s Swim Training.

Class Descriptions
Parent/Tot

This class is designed for parents who want to get in the water with their babies! We will teach you the best way to teach your infant to swim and how to be safe around the water.  We recommend children are between 6 months and 2 years of age.

Tot 1-4

These classes are designed to get younger children (ages 3 to 5) comfortable in the water and swimming!  Most skills are taught with the support of the instructor until the child becomes comfortable in the water alone.  Skills range from submerging faces and floating (tot 1) to learning basic strokes (tot 2 – 4).

Beginner

For children over the age of 5 who still may be uncomfortable in the water or just learning to swim.  They will learn to hold their breath, float, glide, and work on basic movement through the water.  Most skills are done with assistance from the instructor.  Students should be able to hold onto the wall for the duration of the lesson (30 minutes).

Beginner 2

By this time, swimmers should be comfortable unsupported in the water on both their stomach and back. This class is where primary swimming skills will be taught.  Some classes may be held in deep water.

Advanced Beginner

Students should be able to swim 5 yards, unassisted, on both their stomach and back and should be comfortable in deep water. In this class, swimmers will begin to learn new strokes, be expected to swim farther, and learn to dive (kneeling)  from the edge of the pool.

Intermediate

Children should be able to swim across the deep end on their stomach and back, do a kneeling dive, and retrieve objects unassisted from the bottom of the pool.  In the intermediate class, students will learn to tread water, scull, dive standing, and the scissor kick.

Swimmer

Must be able to swim 25 yards (the length of the pool), freestyle and backstroke, tread water for two minutes, and do a standing dive.  Breaststroke, sidestroke, dolphin kick, and different dives will be taught during this class.

Advanced Swimmer

Swimmers should be able to swim 50 yards of freestyle and backstroke and at least 10 yards of sidestroke, breaststroke, and dolphin kick.  Stroke technique and endurance will be taught in the advanced swimmer class, along with flip turns, spring board dives, and butterfly.

Advanced Skills

Students should be able to do all strokes, swim at least 100 yards continuously, and tread water for 3 minutes.  Endurance and stroke refinement will be worked in this course.  By the end, students should be able to swim 500 yards continuously.

AQUATIC SPECIALTY CLASSES

Stroke Technique

Improve your stroke technique!  This class will teach drills to help perfect each stroke.  Students should be able to swim 25 yards.

Junior Lifeguard

Dream of being a lifeguard when you turn 16? Learn the prevention of aquatic accidents, swimming skills, response in an emergency, leadership skills, and professionalism as a lifeguard.  Must be 11 years old, be able to swim 25 yards, tread water for one minute, and swim to a depth of 10 feet.  Class is 1 hour per day for two weeks.

Masters Swim

Daily swim workout class for adults who wish to have structured training sessions.  Yardage and repeat times are adjusted for the individual’s ability level. This is a workout class with very little stroke technique.
