SUMMER 2009 SCHEDULE

Aquatics

Our summer aquatic schedule includes three two-week sessions running from June 30 – August 7.  Lessons are taught Monday through Thursday of each week, while Saturday and private lessons are also available. Swim lessons are taught by American Red Cross certified instructors.

Class Descriptions
(Two-week classes)
Parent/Tot
This class is designed for parents who want to get in the water with their babies! We will teach you the best way to teach your infant to swim and how to be safe around the water.  We recommend children are between 6 months and 2 years of age.
Tot 1-4
These classes are designed to get younger children (ages 3 to 5) comfortable in the water and swimming!  Most skills are taught with the support of the instructor until the child becomes comfortable in the water alone.  Skills range from submerging faces to learning basic strokes.
Beginner
For children over the age of 5 who still may be uncomfortable in the water or just learning to swim.  They will learn to hold their breath, float, glide, and work on basic movement through the water.  Most skills are done with assistance from the instructor.  Students should be able to hold onto the wall for the duration of the lesson (30 minutes).
Beginner 2
By this time, swimmers should be comfortable unsupported in the water on both their stomach and back. This class is where primary swimming skills will be taught.  Some classes may be held in deep water.
Advanced Beginner
Students should be able to swim 5 yards, unassisted, on both their stomach and back and should be comfortable in deep water. In this class, swimmers will begin to learn new strokes, be expected to swim farther, and learn to dive (kneeling)  from the edge of the pool.
 Intermediate
Children should be able to swim across the deep end on their stomach and back, do a kneeling dive, and retrieve objects unassisted from the bottom of the pool.  In the intermediate class, students will learn to tread water, scull, dive standing, and the scissor kick.
Swimmer
Must be able to swim 25 yards (the length of the pool), freestyle and backstroke, tread water for two minutes, and do a standing dive.  Breaststroke, sidestroke, dolphin kick, and different dives will be taught during this class.
Advanced Swimmer
Swimmers should be able to swim 50 yards of freestyle and backstroke and at least 10 yards of sidestroke, breaststroke, and dolphin kick.  Stroke technique and endurance will be taught in the advanced swimmer class, along with flip turns, spring board dives, and butterfly.
Advanced Skills
Students should be able to do all strokes, swim at least 100 yards continuously, and tread water for 3 minutes.  Endurance and stroke refinement will be worked in this course.  By the end, students should be able to swim 500 yards continuously.
Junior Lifeguard
Dream of being a lifeguard when you turn 16? Learn the prevention of aquatic accidents, swimming skills, response in an emergency, leadership skills, and professionalism as a lifeguard.  Must be 11 years old, be able to swim 25 yards, tread water for one minute, and swim to a depth of 10 feet.  Class is one hour per day.
Snorkeling
Learn to snorkel.  Class will cover basic snorkeling technique: comfort in the water, use of a snorkel, and basic swimming kicks.  One week session; snorkel and mask will need to be provided. Students should be comfortable in the water and be able to swim 25 yards.
Beginning Water Polo
Like team sports? Want to have fun and work out in the water? Then learn the basics of water polo!  You will learn how to handle a water polo ball, passing, shooting, and an overview of the game.  One week session, no experience necessary.
Master’s Swim
A non-competitive swim group for adults with workouts ranging from 3000-4000 yards.  Workouts designed to be fun and keep you in shape and include both distance and interval training.  Also a good guide for triathlon training.  6-7:00 PM Monday through Thursday.
