Aquatics Classes

Flowboarding
The flowboarding classes are taught at the Wave House (3146 Mission Blvd. in Mission Beach; transportation not provided). Boards provided; bring your wetsuit if you have one. Contact Lisa Virtue (858) 228-9334 for class meeting times.

Beginning: No prerequisites. Learn how to stand up on the FlowRider, Wave House's sheet wave attraction. Flowboarding combines elements of such sports as wakeboarding, surfing, skateboarding and snowboarding.                             Advanced: Prerequisites: Prior class participation and wave riding, or prior approval by Lisa Virtue at Wave House Athletic Club. Learn advanced flowboarding techniques-surf the ten foot barrel, learn tricks such as airs, sprays, 360's, and flips.

Lifeguarding
Learn the skills and techniques required to become a lifeguard in this Red Cross certifying class. There are additional fees for books and Red Cross Card.
Multi-Water Sports
This fun class teaches you a variety of water-based sports and games, such as water volleyball, water basketball, innertube water polo, spring board diving, water polo, swim meets,etc. The idea is to get fit and have fun playing games in the pool. Sports and games will rotate every few classes, so there will be something for everyone.
SCUBA Diving - Beg
Experience the beauty of the underwater world first hand. This class will fully prepare you for the experience of scuba diving. Included in the program: 1. Five combination video presentations and discussion sessions, on the knowledge, judgement and tech- nical aspects of diving. 2. Four pool sessions to acquire the watermanship skills necessary to be a safe diver. 3. One ocean orientation lecture dealing with water conditions, marine plants, and animals found in this area. 4. Five open water dives for practical experience in an ocean environment on Saturdays. An internationally recognized certification card is earned upon completion of this course.  Extra fees are required for you to purchase or rent a snorkle, mask, booties, fins and gloves.  All USD students enrolled get a discount on products from Ocean Enterprises.
SCUBA Diving - Advanced
The advanced SCUBA course is an opportunity for the certified SCUBA diver to obtain additional training in specialized areas of diving. The class will present four topics. Each topic will include one lecture session and two ocean dives. 1. Underwater navigation
2. Limiting visibility and night diving 3. Stress and rescue 4. Deep diving
Students may choose two or four of the specialties that interest them. In this way, the advanced course may be tailored to the individual student's interests and abilities. Upon completing twenty four logged dives (including the eight dives of the four specialty classes), the diver is eligible for the Scuba Schools International advanced divers certification card.
Swim Conditioning - Multi Level
This course is for those who would like to utilize swimming as their means of fitness. New swimmers and those out of shape swimmers will be brought from a low level swim conditioning workout at the beginning of the semester to a comprehensive workout at the end of the semester. Students will learn how to use the pace clock, work on swimming strokes, and learn the competitive turns for those strokes. Workouts will include both distance and interval training will be utilized. Yardage will range from 2,000 to 3,000 yards a class. In addition, non-swimming exercises will be incorporated into the water workouts.
Swim Training/Stroke Development
This class is offered for all levels of swimming skills (beginner-advanced). Students will work on all strokes helping them to become more efficient swimmers
Water Polo
Ideal for water polo club members and those who want to learn the game. Students will be required to attend two classes a week. Conditioning, skill development, and game strategy will be emphasized. Scrimmages and drills for skill development included, as well as some
swimming conditioning and leg work. Class begins mid February.
Water Safety/Swim Lesson Instructor
This class teaches you the proper techniques required to teach young children through adults how to swim. The class meets the 40 hour WSI Red Cross requirement. When you have completed the requirements, you will receive the Res Cross WSI card.
Watersports/Mission Bay Aquatics Cener
Mission Bay Aquatic Center is the world's largest instructional waterfront facility, featuring wakeboarding, sailing, surfing, waterskiing, rowing, kayaking, windsurfing, and kiteboarding.
