USD Hosts Several Veteran-Focused Events This Week

A series of campus events, hosted by the University of San Diego and the Military and Veterans Program, will take place this week to recognize, help and celebrate those who've served our country proudly.

Amazon on Campus

On Tuesday, Nov. 7, Amazon will be on the USD campus seeking potential new hires, particularly veteran students. The event will be held in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice building (Rooms H and I) from noon to 3 p.m. Topics to be discussed include an overview of Amazon's company, an opportunity to build your LinkedIn profile session and tips on creating a resume. There will also be interviews scheduled for student veterans. Either way, this is a great networking opportunity for all participants. For more information, contact USD's Student Veteran Services Coordinator Amanda Etter at (619) 260-5945 or email her at

Military Benefits for Business Graduate School

On Wednesday, Nov. 8, USD's School of Business Graduate Programs will host a military benefits information session from 5 to 5:45 p.m. in the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, Conference Room G. Student veterans and military-connected students can learn about the business schools' multiple graduate programs and information on how your military benefits can fund a graduate business degree. La Gran Terraza's Salute to Service, Support

La Gran Terraza, USD’s on-campus fine dining restaurant, is having a special promotion Nov. 8-10. One dollar from every burger sold will be donated to the Warrior Foundation Freedom Station, and military personnel enjoy 20 percent off their meals. Salute to Service at La Gran Terraza will be November 8 and 10 during lunch and dinner and November 9 during lunch.

CEE Discussion, Veterans Day Ceremony

There are two Nov. 9 events. The first will be hosted by the Center for Educational Excellence (CEE) from 12:15-2:15 p.m. and there is a special Veterans Day event from 4-6 p.m., hosted by the USD Military and Veterans Program.

The CEE and Military and Veterans Program will host a session titled, "IES: The Strategic Student Veteran." In this interactive session by Amanda Etter, she will share the unique approach USD is taking to work with the student veteran population on campus and in the greater community. The workshop includes a faculty and veteran-student panel to discuss the strategic mindset of student veterans in the classroom.

Later in the day, the Military and Veteran Program will present a Veterans Day ceremony in Hahn University Center's Forum C from 4-6 p.m. Robert Muth, supervising attorney for USD's Veterans Legal Clinic within USD's School of Law, will serve as the keynote speaker. Muth was a captain and judge advocate in the U.S. Marine Corps, serving in Iraq and at Camp Pendleton in San Diego. Refreshments will be provided and all are welcome to attend.

Founders Gala Salutes Military and Veterans

On Saturday, November 11, the official recognized national Veterans Day holiday, the University of San Diego will present the Founders Gala in the Jenny Craig Pavilion, beginning at 5 p.m. Founders Gala, which supports the Founders Endowed Scholarship Fund, will recognize not only USD student scholars, but will also have a salute to military veterans. The event will also establish an endowed scholarship fund dedicated to USD student veterans.

Two men who will be part of the evening's festivities are Founders Gala Honorary Chairman Army Major General William M. Matz Jr. (retired), who received a master's degree in the College of Arts and Sciences in 1973, and Rear Admiral Yancy B. Lindsey, Commander, Navy Region Southwest, who graduated in 2001 with a Master of Science Global Leadership degree from USD's School of Business.

Furthermore, there will be a reserved table for a few "Hometown Heroes" who were nominated by the public in a joint promotion done by USD and NBC-TV San Diego. More than 100 nominations were accepted, but the five local military members selected to attend the Founders Gala are: 1999 USD alumnus Michael Murphy, who is currently a commander in the Naval Reserves; Karolyn D. Smith, who served in the U.S. Army from 2002-14 concluding her service with the rank of Sergeant E-5; Lynn Welling is a retired Navy Captain who served from 1978-2012; Thomas Delaney, a retired Master Sergeant in the Air Force from 1956-76; and Adrian M. Brown, who served in the Army from 1990-93 with the top rank of Specialist E-4.

Military, Veterans are Welcome, Supported at USD

The many veteran-connected events demonstrates one reason why USD has been recognized in 2017 as one of the Best School for Veterans in the country by U.S. News & World Report

“Before I joined the team, I already felt that USD was an ideal destination for military and veteran students. After working here, I now know that the values rooted in USD of ‘educating the whole person’ and the character-building education approach develops student veterans and military connected students in a very unique way,” said Amanda Etter, a Marine Corps veteran who took on USD's Student Veteran Services Coordinator role in late August.
