Advising Office FAQs

How do I declare my major in the School of Business?

When you come in for your appointment, we will review your DARS and discuss your requirements for the major and for graduation. In order to declare, you must first make an appointment with a School of Business advisor click the link above. There will be no appointments to declare your major during registration.

When do I declare my major?

It is best to declare your SBA major during your sophomore year, before the registration period begins.  This allows plenty of time to plan out your schedule and ensure you graduate in four years.

I am a student entering the School of Business Administration. Where can I find more information on the SBA and what it has to offer?

The USD web site and the Undergraduate Programs section of the site is a good place to start! There is a wealth of information on these pages and you should take some time to browse around. Once you declare their major in the School of Business, whether as a second semester sophomore or as a transfer student, take some time to review the following documents which contains information on the SBA including majors, advising and career services.

There is not a separate admissions process to the School of Business Administration. For information on applying to USD and transfer of credits taken at other universities prior to transferring to USD, please contact the Transfer Admission Counselor, at (619) 260-4506.

What do I need to complete my degree?

You must complete 124 units, 48 of which must be upper-division (300 level or above), have a minimum of a 2.0 GPA, and complete the Passport requirements.

For details on specific course requirements, please see Majors.

When do I submit my graduation petition?

A petition for graduation is required by the Registrar in order to graduate.  This must be submitted to the Advising Office for review once 90 units earned or 12 months prior to graduation which ever one comes first.  It will then be forwarded to the Registrar’s office for final processing.

May I take a course over the summer at a school other than USD?
If so, how do I know if it will be accepted?

Before your senior year, you may take a lower division course at a local college, but the last 30 units must be completed at USD. If you wish to transfer a course in from
another institution, it must be reviewed and approved.  Please complete and submit a completed Petition of Transfer Credit form to be considered to the Advising Office found at http://www.sandiego.edu/registrar/forms.php#seven.

Can I take a class Pass/Fail?

If you are in the Fall 2006 bulletin or later, all General Education and major courses must be taken for a grade.

Can I crash a class if it is closed?

As of Fall 2008, there is no crashing in the School Of Business Administration.  If a class is closed, please come to the Advising Office, OH 115, to add your name to the wait-list, as you will be notified when and if a seat opens.  Outside of the Business School, you will want to contact the individual professor or school about getting into a closed class.

I am an SBA student and would like to Study Abroad.  What do you recommend?

The School of Business strongly suggests students to study abroad.
The recommended time to do so is during your sophomore year before taking Upper Division Business courses. You can contact the Study Abroad Office in Serra Hall 115 about programs that would fit your goals.

I need help finding either a job or internship!  Where do I go?
