Frequently Asked Questions
When does the MSGL Program start?
We begin three San Diego-area cohorts each year: December, April, and August.
I live outside of Southern California. Can I still complete the MSGL degree?
Yes! The MSGL program is a "hybrid" degree that combines traditional classroom time with online learning. If you are unable to attend the monthly weekend class sessions, you can still participate online as a distance learner. You will still be required to attend classes on campus one week at the beginning and one week at the end of the program.
What if I am required to move away due to a job change or military orders during my time in the program?
The MSGL program offers a great amount of flexibility so that you can continue your studies as a distance learner as long as you have access to high speed internet and can complete your team and individual assignments. Regardless of where you live, you'll be required to attend two 1-week sessions on campus.
When is the application deadline?
We have a rolling admissions process, meaning we accept applications at any time. Deadlines to enter the start dates listed above are November 1, March 1, and July 1. Because the class size is limited to only 22 people, we recommend submitting your application early to guarantee your seat in the cohort.
What is required for admission into the MSGL program?
The following items are required for consideration by the Office of Graduate Admissions:
Grade point average of 3.0 or better from an accredited institution
Minimum of two years work experience
Personal essay
Supervisor's recommendation letter
Resume
Undergraduate Transcripts
The selection committee reviews any application as a complete package. Depending on the strength of the other parts of your application, you may be eligible for the MSGL program even if you have less than the required 3.0 GPA.
Do I need to take the GMAT or GRE?
No. The MSGL admissions board considers the strength of your complete application, but does not require a GMAT or GRE score. If you have already taken either test, you can always include your score in the application.
I'm interested in getting my Project Management Certification. Can the MSGL program help?
The MSGL's three-course project management sequence was designed to prepare students to take the Project Management Professional (PMP®) certification examination. All students completing these three courses will be awarded a Certificate in Project Management from the University of San Diego’s School of Business Administration. This certificate satisfies the education requirement for the PMP® certification only. You must still take the PM exam and have documented PM experience. For more information on obtaining the full certification, please visit www.pmi.org.
Do I need a laptop computer to complete the program?
Although it is not required at this time, we recommend you have a newer laptop computer that can run bandwidth-intensive applications such as streaming video. Much of your coursework will be online even if you are a resident learner. Most of our current students do own newer laptops and find them helpful when collaborating with team members. You will also need uninterrupted access to high speed internet for the duration of the program. We are a PC-based program, so you will need appropriate software if you are a Mac user.
Can I continue the program while on a military deployment?
Due to the amount of work required, collaboration with others, and need for high speed internet access throughout the program, we believe it would be difficult to continue working in the MSGL program while operationally deployed with limited connectivity. If you are deployed, you will be able to pick up where you leave off and finish the program with another cohort without losing credit for work completed and at no extra cost to you.
Are there scholarships or tuition discounts available?
We proudly offer a 20% tuition reduction to our active duty military students, spouses of active duty, and select corporate partners. Students are able to combine the tuition reduction with the Montgomery GI Bill, Tuition Assistance, and/or other scholarships and reimbursement programs that may be provided by your employer.
Does the MSGL program offer study abroad options?
Yes! Study abroad options are available on a limited basis to countries such as Argentina, Brazil, Spain, and Hong Kong. Contact us for more information!
