In recognition of both Global Entrepreneurship Week and International Education Week during November 14 - 19, the Ahlers Center for International Business and the Entrepreneurship Club (E-Club) welcome distinguished entrepreneur, Bala Manian, PhD, founder of ReaMetrix. Dr. Manian will be speaking on "Changing the Global Entrepreneurship Paradigm: Innovations in Affordable Healthcare."

Please RSVP by 5 p.m. November 11. Registration includes presesentation and networking reception to follow.

During this talk, Bala Manian will describe his trials and tribulations as an entrepreneur in Silicon Valley over a period of the last several decades. He will articulate not just the thrill of his successes in each journey but, more importantly, share the agonies of his failures and the lessons he learned through those failures.

Over the last seven years, he has been trying to apply his learning from Silicon Valley to building a similar eco-system in the "Silicon Valley of India" – Bangalore. He will articulate successes and barriers in translating experiences across geographic and cultural boundaries. Through the narratives of his journeys, he hopes to covey what he has learned over three decades, what worked for him and what did not, the mentors who made a difference, what he understood about himself and what he is still trying to figure out.

Dr. Manian has been an entrepreneurial innovator, investor and a mentor in the Silicon Valley entrepreneurial community for the last three decades. At present Dr. Manian is focused on ReaMetrix, which he founded in May of 2003. ReaMetrix is focused on bringing affordable and yet economically attractive solutions to address the needs of developing nations. ReaMetrix is using this activity as a means to evolve out-of-the-box innovations to address global healthcare needs.

Dr. Manian is a founder and/or a co-founder of a large number of successful life science and medical technology companies in Silicon Valley over the last thirty years. He was a member of the faculty at the University of Rochester in Rochester, New York, for four years before his activities in Silicon Valley. Over the last eight years he has been spending a lot of time in India on the ground, and this experience has shaped his views on what can and cannot be accomplished through India. He serves on the board of BIOCON, a leading biotechnology company in India. He also serves as an advisor to several governmental and non-governmental life science initiatives in India. He holds a BS degree in physics from the University of Madras, an MS degree in applied optics from the University of Rochester, and a PhD in mechanical engineering from Purdue University.
