We’ve all heard about the power of teams. We know that successful leaders can energize teams to be productive and successful where others fail. In this age of quick and abbreviated communications among members of work teams, we are failing to develop the deep relationships that enhance effective teamwork. Fostering a culture of empowered teams and motivated employees is a constant topic of conversation, but no single formula for success has been identified. This talk will provide a guide for how to regularly bring your work teams together, into the kitchen, to engage in a meaningful teambuilding exercise that will foster deeper relationships and a greater understanding of each other. As a result, team members will look out for each other, fill the gap in each other’s weaknesses, and appreciate the skills and talents of their co-workers. Key leadership lessons from the kitchen will be shared with the audience.

Questions to be addressed by this talk:

  • How can teamwork lessons learned in the kitchen be relevant in the workplace?
  • Why is the apron a great equalizer when work teams are engaged in team-building activities and how does the apron enable situational leadership?
  • Why are we willing to be more vulnerable in the kitchen and what are the implications for the workplace?
  • How do personal and professional relationships change after breaking bread together?
  • Why is it important to the functioning of a cohesive team that all members share in success or failure?

Speaker Biography:

After 30 years in financial and operations management, primarily in life sciences companies, Karin Eastham now divides her time between the boardroom and the kitchen.

Eastham serves as a director for Illumina, Inc., Geron Corporation, Trius Therapeutics, Inc. and MorphoSys AG (based in Munich, Germany). She previously served on the boards of Amylin Pharmaceuticals, Genoptix, Tercica, and SGX in addition to several private company boards and not-for-profit organizations.

Eastham is the recipient of several prestigious awards, including the 2004 Women Who Mean Business Award, the UCSD Athena 2007 Technology Pinnacle Award and the Corporate Directors Forum 2007 Director of the Year Award in Corporate Governance.

During her professional life spanning more than three decades, she has contributed to the success of several biotechnology and life science companies, while cooking and entertaining for weekend fun and as a teambuilding tool with her work teams. In her book, she combines her leadership skills with her passion for cooking, dining and entertaining. Cook the Part provides you with the game plan for eight themed dinners, a delicious way to cook up fun with friends or colleagues, while increasing team effectiveness and collaboration. Eastham is now addressing business groups with her talk, “Cook Up Some Teamwork: Leadership Lessons from the Kitchen.” Cook the Part: Delicious, Interactive and Fun Team Cooking (Crosswalk Press 2011) was a finalist in USA Best Books and a 2012 Gold Medal Winner of the IPPY Awards (Independent Publisher Book Awards).
