Seminar Description:

The importance of sustainable and socially responsible business practices places global supply chain practices in the spotlight for corporate executives. There are extreme challenges of dealing with multiple countries and suppliers, and managing conflicting stakeholder agendas (i.e. profitability versus environmental and social sustainability) can be difficult. However, these agendas do not necessarily need to be exclusive of one another. To be effective, sustainable development must extend from an individual company, both up and down the supply chain. Driving the sustainability agenda in all sectors of the economy demands that we understand how our supply chains contribute to improved resource use, support socially responsible and inclusive practices in our upstream and downstream supply chains, and deliver true sustainability to consumers. This seminar will provide an understanding of how to manage supply chains to deliver a greater environmental and social impact. The first seminar module will concentrate largely on global supply chain strategy, followed by a greater focus of sustainability issues in the next two modules.

Seminar Leaders:
David Pyke, PhD is dean of the School of Business Administration at the University of San Diego. Formerly, he was professor of Operations Management, and associate dean at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration at Dartmouth College. He has made major research contributions in inventory models, production planning and scheduling, and global production and distribution systems. He is a frequent faculty at executive programs, and has taught at the International University of Japan, the Helsinki School of Economics and the WHU - Otto-Beisheim-Hochschule, Vallendar, Germany. He has consulted for The Rand Corporation, Accenture, Corning, DHL, Eaton, Home Depot and Markem, among others. He serves on the Board of Directors of GW Plastics, Concepts NREC, and the Lwala Community Alliance, a nonprofit focused on community development in Kenya. He is a scientific advisor for SignalDemand and for SeeControl.

Simon Croom, PhD, has spent his entire professional career in supply chain management, both as practitioner and as a leading academic researcher. His postgraduate studies were in in both politics and history and management science. His PhD research was into co-design capabilities in the auto industry supply chain of Jaguar Cars through the doctoral program of Warwick Business School in the UK. He was admitted as Fellow to the Chartered Institute of Purchasing and Supply in 1992. Croom has held an Associate Professorship in Operations at Warwick Business School for 12 years and previously was Senior Lecturer in Strategic Management, Operations Research and Supply Chain Management in the UK at Sheffield Hallam and Coventry Universities.  He is a Research Fellow at Curtin Business School in Perth, Australia. In his business career, Croom owned several successful retail businesses and was a supply chain professional at Jaguar Cars Ltd and Eaves & Washbourne, both located in England.
