Alfred S. Chavez Jr. CPA (Fred) joined the University of San Diego in September 2005 as University Auditor.  In that capacity, Mr. Chavez is responsible for accomplishing the University’s internal audit program (audits, investigations and advisory services).  While reporting to the President of the University, the University Auditor works closely with the Vice President for finance and the Controller and helps them communicate both the plans for routine audits to be accomplished and the results of audits performed to the Trustees Audit Sub-Committee.

Prior to coming to the University, Mr. Chavez was Director of Internal Audit for 22 years for the University System of Maryland, a $2.7 billion system of universities and research institutions.  Prior to that, he was University Auditor at his alma mater, the University of New Mexico.  He began his career with the then-Big 8 firm of Peat Marwick Mitchell & Co.

Mr. Chavez has been active for many years with the Association of College and University Officers, serving as their president in 1993.  He has presented many workshops at internal auditor conferences on various topics.  Mr. Chavez is also a member of the Institute of Internal Auditors and the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants.

Mr. Chavez graduated with a Bachelor of Business Administration from the University of New Mexico and subsequently obtained his CPA certificate.
