Senate
The AS Senate is the most significant student forum which acts as the democratic body of the USD undergraduate student population. The Student Senate is the legislative body of the student government (AS). Each organization will have an active voice in decision-making and issue resolution. Participation in the Student Senate has a profound affect on the University of San Diego.
Student Senate is composed of 32 people, each involved in a student club or organization. In an attempt to represent a great variety of aspects that are part of campus life, seat selection is taken very seriously. (Please see the Associated Students Constitution for a description of the process.) As a working body, Student Senate legislates rules and regulations, student organization and club approval, elections standards, student supported resolutions, and amendments to the Associated Students Constitution. Meetings for Student Senate will be held every other Thursday from 12:15-2:00pm.
There are two opportunities to become involved with Student Senate. The first chance is to attend Student Senate as an informal member. Every meeting is open to all students and anyone may speak. Through this opportunity you and your organization can decide when to attend, however you will not be allowed to vote at the meeting. As a formal member, a larger opportunity for influence presents itself as you will be allowed to vote on all issues and topics. There is more responsibility that comes with the formal member seat; you must petition to become a formal member, and you will be expected to attend every meeting. To qualify for a voting seat, your organization must be officially registered and approved by Senate for a minimum of two (2) years. Voting seats will be selected based on the petitions submitted to the Associated Students Executive Board and the criteria established by the AS Constitution.
