The university years involve significant intellectual, social, and emotional developmental milestones that are exciting and challenging. Consistent with the university mission of holistic education, the Counseling Center engages in a broad range of services designed to support the personal and academic development of students. Professional psychologists, psychologists-in-training, and a consulting psychiatrist work together to meet students’ psychological and academic needs.
Counseling Services
Many students experience difficulties as they adjust to university life. Stress, loneliness, anxiety, depression, body image concerns and relationship issues are common. Individual counseling and counseling groups are available to all enrolled students. Any student who comes to the Counseling Center receives an assessment with recommendations provided by a counselor for appropriate services. Depending on student needs and counselor availability, recommendations may include services provided by the Counseling Center or services provided by other professionals on campus or in the community. Services provided by the center are free to students.
Prevention and Education
The Counseling Center works closely with the Center for Health and Wellness Promotion (www.sandiego.edu/chwp/) to provide a wide range of workshops, trainings, seminars, and outreach presentations to university students, staff, and faculty. Topics for these presentations include body image and eating concerns, academic performance, substance abuse, freshman adjustment, and relationship issues.
Help with Academic Performance
Students who are on academic probation or who want to improve their academic performance are encouraged to consult with the Counseling Center. The staff at the center can evaluate academic problems and offer counseling to address a number of concerns, including test anxiety, lack of motivation, and other related problems. The staff may also refer students to a range of academic support services available at the university.
More detailed information about the Counseling Center is available at the Center’s Website (www.sandiego.edu/usdcc/).
