YUMAN LANGUAGE SUMMIT APRIL 29-30, 2008 BARONA INDIAN RESERVATION CONVENTION CENTER LAKESIDE, CALIFORNIA
Hello everyone! The Yuman family of languages and cultures includes our local San Diego Kumeyaay and northern Baja California indigenous groups, along with several other indigenous groups of Arizona. Once a year, members of all these groups get together to talk about what they’re doing to try to preserve their indigenous languages. This year the conference is right here at the Barona Indian Reservation Convention Center; check it out: http://www.baronatribe.org/ VOLUNTEERS are needed to accompany Baja California artisans and cultural specialists of the Kumeyaay, Paipai and Kiliwa tribes at their arts and information tables. We need people for four-hour shifts in the morning or in the afternoon (or stay all day!) on either Tuesday April 29 or Wednesday April 30. You will need to provide your own transportation; it’s about half an hour drive from San Diego, for directions see: http://www.barona.com/directions.html Bilingual (Spanish/English) is helpful but not absolutely necessary. Come be a part of this important event and get to know some of our region’s outstanding indigenous cultural authorities. If you are able to volunteer, please contact me at mikewilken@yahoo.com Thanks! Mike Wilken
