Mortar Board
History
Mortar Board was founded in 1918 as the first and only national honor society for college senior women. In 1975, the members voted to include men in the organization. Today, there are over 200 collegiate chapters with over 230,000 alumni. The Alcalá Senior Honor Society Chapter of Mortar Board was installed on the USD campus on October 22, 2000.
Philanthropy
At the University of San Diego, the Mortar Board chapter agrees upon certain community service projects to which the members devote their time, energy, and experience. Each year, members mentor Upward Bound students from Kearny High School and have created the STRIVE (Seeking to Recognize Individual Visions of Excellence) Scholarship. Each spring, the scholarship is awarded to graduating Kearny High School seniors who have excelled in scholarship, leadership, and service. The STRIVE Scholarship will assist them with the increasing costs of college or university enrollment.
