Volunteer Opportunities

Thank you for your interest in volunteering. Below are the many opportunities for you to give back to USD. We hope you will consider becoming involved with the Alumni Association or with another part of campus. Alumni Association

Homecoming and Reunions
  • Be a member of the Homecoming Committee and help to plan the weekend
  • Fundraise for your Class Reunion Gift
  • Be a Class Reunion Ambassador and call classmates to get them back for the weekend
Regional Chapters
  • Become a member of a Regional Chapter Committee in one of the following areas: San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, San Francisco, Portland, Phoenix, Las Vegas, Chicago, New York, or Washington D.C.
Student/Alumni Networking
  • Become a career mentor on the Torero Network
  • Attend Take a Torero to Lunch and share career advice with students
  • Speak at a student organization meeting or class about your USD experience
  • Mentor freshman students as an alumni preceptor
Scholarship Readers
  • Read student scholarship applications and award recipients for the Kyle O’Connell Memorial Scholarship, Terry Whitcomb Alumni Scholarship and the Senior Class Legacy Scholarships
Campus Events
  • Pass out food at Finals Feeding Frenzy
  • Be a volunteer at the Homecoming Picnic and Tailgate
  • Join a panel of alumni to talk with students or parents about the first year experience or to talk with seniors about life after graduation
Fundraising
  • Be an advocate for the Alumni Endowed Scholarship Fund and the Alcalá Alumni Fund and encourage alumni to give back to USD in any way that they can
Admissions/Parent Relations

  • Help the Admissions Team to recruit and retain the best students by attending college fairs, making congratulatory phone calls, attending receptions or interviewing out-of-town students.

  • Join the Parent Relations Team in different cities around the country to meet with incoming freshman students and share your USD experience
School of Business
  • Become a member of the SBA Alumni Council
  • Mentor students in the MBA program
School of Law

Alumni Advisor Program
  • Mentor current students, come to Careers in the Law or be part of the directory
Brown Bag Discussion Series
  • Meet with first year students to discuss certain topics about law school
Moot Court Competitions & Mock Trials
  • Be a judge for these competitions

Pro Bono Legal Advocates

Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice
  • Act as a docent, or help to staff events and/or work in the office.
Center for Awareness, Service & Action

Best Buddies
  • Befriend a developmentally delayed person through individual mentoring and large group activities.
Earth Awareness
  • Students promote environmental education on-campus and in the community through environmental/marine biology workshops for local elementary schools and after-school projects.
Helping Hand
  • Provide assistance to CASA team leaders with one time events, i.e. Trick or Treat, natural disaster preparedness, Linda Vista Multicultural Fair, and other programs.
Shoes That Fit
  • Provide shoes and clothing to local school children on a one-to-one basis. Children are identified by parents, teachers, and school nurses, and their needs are posted on campus.
Special Olympics
  • USD hosts an annual Special Olympics Basketball Tournament in April. Interact with the athletes and help with the event by keeping score, timing, preparing dinner or officiating a game.
Workplace Literacy
  • Volunteers tutor USD employees whose first language is not English. USD employees in turn can help teach their native language to the USD tutor. Tutors work one-on-one with their learner. Two-semester commitment is required.
Southeast San Diego Tutoring
  • Contact David Hay in the English Department at (619) 260-4252.
University Ministry

Special Delivery
  • Meals are delivered to homebound AIDS and HIV patients in the San Diego area on Fridays from 2:30 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
Soup Kitchen
  • Make the lunchtime meal at the St. Vincent de Paul Soup Kitchen on Thursdays from 11 a.m. - 1 p.m.
Monthly Tijuana Service:
  • Each month an opportunity is offered to spend one day serving and learning in Tijuana, Mexico. Perfect for first timers. The monthly trip is generally taken the first Saturday of each month.
Hunger and Homelessness Week
  • Serve the hungry and homeless and learn about the causes and solutions to the issues.
Interfaith Shelter Network
  • Help staff a rotational shelter in San Diego during both fall and spring semester.
