Seasonal Flu Vaccine (Nasal FluMist) is Available at the Student Health Center

The nasal spray vaccine to protect against the seasonal (“regular”) flu is available at the Student Health Center (SHC)!

Unfortunately, the SHC has run out of the injectable flu vaccine (“flu shots”). In anticipation of additional seasonal flu vaccine usage, the SHC was fortunate to acquire nearly double the usual amount of vaccine that’s given on campus. However, in the first 2 weeks of being available on campus, we have run out of the injectable vaccine (“flu shot”) and won’t be receiving more until November.  The manufacturers have redirected their efforts to produce the H1N1 vaccine.

Seasonal flu vaccine is available for anyone who would like to protect himself against the seasonal flu. It is specifically recommended for persons at higher risk for complications of the seasonal flu, including:

  • Children under 19 years of age
  • Persons 65 years of age and older
  • Pregnant women
  • Persons of any age with a chronic health condition that increases risk of serious illness from the flu (Click here for more information on high-risk conditions).

The nasal-spray flu vaccine — a vaccine made with live, weakened flu viruses that do not cause the flu (FluMist®). is approved for use in healthy* people 2-49 years of age who are not pregnant.

The following adults should get the inactivated vaccine (flu shot) instead:

  • Adults 50 years of age
  • People who have long-term health problems with:
    • heart disease
    • kidney or liver disease
    •  lung disease (including asthma)
    • metabolic disease, such as diabetes
    • anemia, and other blood disorders
  •  Anyone with certain muscle or nerve disorders (such as seizure disorders or cerebral palsy) that can lead to breathing or swallowing problems.
  •  Anyone with a weakened immune system.
  • Children or adolescents on long-term aspirin treatment.

Seasonal flu vaccine does NOT protect against H1N1 flu. A vaccine to protect against H1N1 flu is expected mid- to late-October. Watch for updated announcements regarding H1N1 vaccine on this website.
