Jennah JonesJennah Jones

Current USD Senior

Jennah Jones, a current USD senior from Laguna Niguel, CA, has definitely proven herself as an USD all-star. Majoring in Sociology with a Leadership minor, Jennah is involved in just about every campus organization. She is currently the Senior R.A. for her residence area, a memeber of Mortar Board Senior Honor Society, Order of Omega, Kappa Alpha Theta sorority, Residence Hall Council advisor, President of the Alcala Club, President of Alpha Kappa Delta (Sociology honor society), retreat leader, a volunteer with University Ministry, and above all USD's 2002 Homecoming Queen.

What do you like best about your on-campus living experience?

Living on campus as an R.A. has provided me with a wonderful experience. I met most of my best freinds through Residence Life and by staying on campus as an R.A., I have been able to develop many lasting relationships with my residents. Hopefully I have helped them to enjoy USD as much as I do. Some particular things I most enjoy include mediating roomate conflicts, giving advice on which classes to take, 3 AM chats to calm residents down, as well as help residents who lock themselves out of their rooms.

How has USD helped you develop your leadership skills?

USD has helped me develop my leadership skills by allowing me to get involved. I moved around a lot while growing up and never had the opportunity to experience leadership positions. Now that I feel at home and am able to me myself, I can be the leader I always wanted to be. Each of my involvements teachs me something new about myself, about others around me, and life in general. For example, as a member of the Alcala Club, I have learned the importance of presentation. When I am escorting the president of USD, Dr. Hayes, I am representing her and the university. In addition, being able to help others as an RA has given me direction in life and caused me to change my career path to student affairs.

What would you recommend to an incoming student to be successful at USD?

For incoming students to USD, my best advice would be to get involved. It may sound cliche, but experience really is life's greatest teacher. USD has so many wonderful ways to get involved and each one allows you to meet new people and find your place at USD.

What is in your future plans?

After I graduate from USD, I hope to become a Resident Director and get my masters in Student Affairs. Then I want to get my doctorate in Sociology so that I can have a career as a sociology professor or in higher education in student affairs. In addition to my career, I hope to find the man of my dreams and have a happy family.
