Megan Corcoran
Current USD Senior
Megan Corcoran, a current USD senior from Ramona, CA, has learned how to be an effective leader. With a major in Psychology and minor in Sociology, Megan finds that the best learning environment is outside of the classroom. Her involvement here includes cheerleading, Orientation Team/Board, A.S. executive assistant, Campus Connections, spiritual and service retreats, as well as volunteering at local schools.
How has your involvement here helped you grow as a person?
Being involved at USD has really shown me what I can do with the unique gifts I have been given. Being on Orientation Board was the best leadership opportunity I have ever experienced. I learned how to communicate with professionals, organize events, and creatively plan for large groups. All of my involvement has given me the chance to be looked up to...a position many of us are not used to. Over time, I have realized that someone is always watching and learning from you, whether you notice it or not.
What did you like best about your on-campus living experience?
I have lived on campus all four years from Camino/Founders, to the Vistas, to Tecolote Village. The best aspect about living here is the proximity to everything. I am able to be involved with many different organizations because I can just run home from meetings, to class and then back home. Living on campus has really helped me stay connected to the university thoughout my college career.
What do you wish you had known before you came to USD?
I wish I had known that people WANTED me to get involved and that I wouldn't be bothering them if I asked questions or came to their office. I wish I would have known what I wanted my major to be as well and who would also be in my major. I wish I had known that time would fly by and each day that went by without getting involved was another opportunity lost. I wish I had also known about the Freshman Retreat!
What would you recommend to an incoming student to be successful at USD?
Explore the majors early! Everyone told me, "Oh you have time, don't worry." But in reality, if you want to get the most out of your major, you should start during your freshman year. Also PLEASE go talk to your professors! They are here for you and WANT to help you. Even if you don't know what to say, go talk to them; it can only do you good! Also USD is an extremely student-freindly environment where your voice can be heard...you just have to get out there and say something.
