The University of San Diego offers merit scholarships to our international students however; you cannot rely solely on financial assistance or awards from the university to support you during your studies. In order to receive your Certificate of Eligibility, Form I-20 from USD, you are required to provide proof of your ability to pay for all of your educational and living expenses.  To do so we ask that you completely fill out the Certification of Finances form.

In addition to completing the Certification of Finances form, you must submit other supporting documents such as a letter from your bank indicating the amount of US Dollars available for your academic studies. Sending a copy of your bank statement without the attached Certification of Finances form is not acceptable. All documents must be original and must be translated into English.  If your funds are coming from several resources you must indicate each source and provide proper documentation for the entire amount of academic expenses.

All international students currently attending an institution within the United States must complete this form. Please have the International Student Advisor at the U.S. school you are currently attending (or last attended) complete Section B and sign. A Form I-20 will not be issued until we have this completed form and all requested documents.

F-1 Visa

Any person who wishes to study in the United States is eligible to apply for an F-1 student visa. To apply for an F-1 student visa, you must provide the following documents at the nearest U.S. Embassy or Consulate in your home country:

    • Passport valid for at least six months
    • Form I-20
    • Financial documents verifying sponsorship
    • Proof of SEVIS I-901 fee payment

Please check with the American Embassy or Consulate regarding the F-1 visa procedure. Due to the immigration regulations constantly changing, it is important to be prepared for your visa appointment. Students are encouraged to apply for their F-1 visa early to provide ample time for visa processing. Students are now eligible to apply for their F-1 visa 120 days prior to the program start date.

Please do not enter the U.S. on a visitor (B-1 or B-2) visa. A visitor in B-1 or B-2 status is not permitted to begin a course of study.

Form I-20

In order for the University of San Diego to issue you a Form I-20, you must:

  • Receive a letter offering you admission.
  • Submit a completed Certification of Finances form with supporting documents.
  • Have a current mailing address. Due to mailing restrictions, we cannot send an I-20 to a P.O. Box (except for certian countries in the Middle East).
  • Indicate a proposed major.
  • Send an enrollment confirmation form with tuition and housing deposits.
If you currently hold an F-1 visa and are attending a US school, you will need a transfer I-20. In order for a Form I-20 to be issued from USD, you will need to complete the attached School Transfer Verification form and submit copies of the following:

Visa page, Passport page, current Form I-20, and both sides of your I-94 card.
