Many transfer students have found a home in the University of San Diego, and we are eager to welcome more. If you are looking to finish your degree in a place where academics and community go hand-in-hand, and where students are provided with the resources to grow intellectually, culturally and spiritually, then USD may be for you.
If you have already completed high school or received a GED and have enrolled in college classes, you should apply as a transfer student. To apply, you are required to be in good standing at your current or most recent institution and are expected to have completed a minimum of 24 semester (36 quarter) units of transferable coursework while maintaining at least a 3.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA).
Admission preference will be given to applicants who have far exceeded the minimum unit and GPA requirements, while also having achieved competitive grades in both English Composition & Literature and College Algebra.
Please note that Advanced Placement (AP) and International Baccalaureate (IB) credits will not count toward the minimum unit requirement. If you previously applied to USD as a first-year candidate and were denied admission, we encourage you to complete one full year of college classes elsewhere before reapplying as a transfer student.
How to Apply
The following credentials must be submitted for your application to be reviewed:
- Completed Common Application, including USD Member Questions
- Official college transcript(s) from all institutions you have attended
- Official course by course evaluation is required if you have foreign college/post-secondary transcripts. We accept World Education Services (WES), Educational Credential Evaluators (ECE) or International Education Research Foundation (IERF). Your transfer application will be considered incomplete, if you do not submit this with your application.
- Official final high school transcript or proof of high school completion or equivalency
- One academic letter of recommendation from your college advisor or college instructor
- Transfer College Report (download here or from your Common Application account)
- Transfer Mid-Term Report (download here or from your Common Application account)

- Application fee of $55 or application fee waiver submitted by your college

Please note that appointments are not required as part of the application process, but you may request an appointment for advising purposes. In order to facilitate your admission decision, a Transfer Mid-Term Report must be submitted so that we may review your grades for the term in progress. For information on transferring credits, please refer to Transferring Credits.
Transfer Housing Requirement
Residential life plays a vital role in the USD experience, so we require that students live on campus for their first and second years. On-campus living will heighten your educational experience as a transfer student by providing more transitional support, access to professional staff in your residential area and assistance with campus resource connectedness. As a transfer student, you will be required to live on campus for at least one year if by the contract start date you:
- are under the age of 20 (and)
- have completed fewer than 60 transferred units (and)
- have not completed 4 semesters of coursework as a full-time student
All housing contracts are for the full academic year, which consists of both fall and spring semesters, or if entered into after the beginning of the academic year, for the remainder of that academic year.
All unmarried new transfer students with credits defining them as either a first year or second year student who are under 20 years of age at the initial start date of their first campus housing agreement period of occupancy at the University of San Diego and who do not commute from the permanent (i.e. primary and not a secondary) San Diego County home of their parent(s) or court appointed legal guardian are required to live in University housing.
A resident who becomes 20 years of age following the resident’s initial matriculation to the University will still be subject to fulfilling the freshman and sophomore residency requirements.
Interested in USD's School of Business?
Students interested in studying business at USD should be aware that the School of Business (SBA) has specific requirements concerning professional development. These requirements are administered through the school’s Professional Development Passport Program.
Completion of the Professional Development Passport is a requirement for the Bachelor of Business Administration, Bachelor of Accountancy and Bachelor of Arts in Economics degrees. All passport activities must be completed by business majors regardless of when the student declares their major.
