What's New at USD

Lately, one cannot walk through our beautiful 180-acre campus without coming across construction workers, bulldozers, and news crews. With new buildings, professional soccer teams and the addition of new academic programs, it is obvious that USD is undergoing major growth and development.

  • Colachis Plaza expansion was completed on August 19, 2005. The expansion consists of landscaped walkways and open lawn. The center courtyard is ringed with trees and seating with a small fountain in the center. The entrances to Maher Hall, Serra Hall, and Warren Hall have been replaced to improve access for diasabled persons and enhance their appearance. This project was entirely funded through the donations from Kathryn Colachis, a former USD trustee, and the O'Tool Foundation.
  • Donald P. Shiley Center for Science and Technology opened in the fall of 2003. The $47 million project includes 70 laboratories, a greenhouse, aquariums, classrooms, and offices. The center will house all science related programs, including biology, chemistry, physics, marine science, and environmental science. This state-of-the-art facility provides hands-on experience for students in the form of independent research projects, class demonstrations and experiments, as well as faculty-assisted research opportunities.
  • USD's Torero Stadium underwent renovations in 2002. The renovations to the stadium included the addition of two areas of seating and an expansion of the playing field.
  • Degheri Alumni Center opened in the Fall of 2003. The three-story, 28,000 square-foot building is located near the main campus entrance. It was designed, in the donor's words, as a "home for the alumni family." It includes an alumni "living room," a comfortable spot just off the two-story entry where graduates can visit, relax and even get nostalgic as they look through old photographs and yearbooks. The center also serves as a hub for more formal alumni gatherings. The open-air center courtyard is ideal for receptions and events, while the outside rear patio and conference room hosts sit-down dinners, classes and meetings of alumni groups such as the Alumni Board and the Student Alumni Association. In addition to a campus hospitality center, the center houses the alumni relations office, the parent relations office, fund-raising offices and the communications and marketing department.
