Educational Opportunity Program

The University of San Diego is firmly committed to providing opportunities to students interested in attending USD.  Each year a limited number of students are admitted to the university as members of the Educational Opportunity Program (EOP).  EOP is designed to assist students who have the potential to succeed, but who without the help of EOP would be unable to realize their academic goals due to cultural, economic or disadvantaged backgrounds.

GUIDELINES

EOP students are required to meet with the Director on a weekly basis for their first year and once a month during their second year.  It is also mandatory that students complete English 1 (Basic Composition) during their first year at USD.  Selected students are a part of the program for their first four semesters.

TUTORING

EOP students are expected to compete on an equal basis with other USD students; therefore, the program provides the means to ensure academic success.  All EOP students are provided free tutorial assistance in General Education courses.  This assistance is also available to all other university students.  Along with tutorial support, workshops are made available to assist in strengthening skills necessary for college achievement.  The EOP Director and staff take personal interest in the progress of each EOP student from the time of his or her application through graduation.

ADVISING

In addition to being advised by their preceptor and subsequently by a major advisor, EOP students are also advised and encouraged individually by the director of EOP.  This provides additional motivation for EOP students to achieve academic success.

FINANCIAL AID

Although EOP does not provide direct financial aid, the EOP staff is available to help admitted EOP students with application procedures.  EOP students, like all students at USD, must apply to the USD Financial Aid Office for aid including special grants, student loans and part-time employment.  EOP students will then be considered for financial assistance as determined by the Office of Financial Aid.  Students are strongly encouraged to submit the necessary paperwork as early as possible.
