Student Health Center – A Gateway Office

The Student Health Center provides confidential testing for those who are concerned that they are pregnant. Pregnancy tests are available at the SHC by walk-in or appointment. There is a $10 fee for the test, but the fee may be waived for those with financial constraints.

If you have recently become pregnant, you may receive prenatal health counseling and referral to community specialists for obstetrical care. If you are without health insurance, you may be eligible for public assistance funding for prenatal and delivery care and pediatric services via MediCal. USD Student Health Center providers can assist with access to care by referring students to community resources to determine eligibility for MediCal.

University Ministry provides pastoral and spiritual counseling to the students, faculty, and staff of USD. The University Ministry Center strives to foster a compassionate faith community and a variety of programs designed to promote holistic well-being, as well as serving as a resource for those seeking support as they prepare for the challenges of parenthood. In addition, the staff of University Ministry serves as a resource for those seeking a healthy balance between family life and academics. University Ministry staff members, including ordained and lay ministers, are available for conversation, pastoral counseling, and spiritual companionship. Appointments can be arranged by contacting the University Ministry Center.

The Counseling Center staff is available to listen, counsel and help guide those in need of assistance. Schedule appointments in person or by phone. Walk-in hours are from 11 am. to 3 p.m. Monday – Friday, extended to 5 pm on Wednesdays. In the event of an emergency, please come directly to the Counseling Center during office hours. If the Center is closed, contact the counselor-on-call via Public Safety at (619) 260–2222, or the San Diego 24-hour Crisis Hotline at (800) 479-3339.

The financial impact of supporting a child and financing your education may be assisted through financial aid counseling with a Financial Aid Counselor. There are many loan options that are available to parents and parenting students to help them stay in school. Having a dependent child is taken into consideration in determining a student's eligibility for financial aid. Contact the USD One Stop Center to update your information or apply for aid.

Pregnant and parenting students are given special consideration with available on-campus living options.  If you are or intend to be a resident student, you should contact the Residential Life Office to discuss your individual situation and housing options with the Assistant Dean of Students for Residential Life.

Manchester Child Development Center

If you are a parenting student, on-campus child care is available for children two and a half years and older through the Manchester Child Development Center. Interested students should be sure to inquire in advance for enrollment. Baby-sitters are listed with the Student Employment Center, which can be reached at (619) 260-4801.

Mother's Room

The University of San Diego supports breastfeeding mothers by providing a private, comfortable room for them to nurse, express and store breast milk for their babies.  The room includes a changing table, cleansing and storage facilities.  To learn more, stop by the Women’s Center (SLP 420) or visit www.sandiego.edu/womenscenter.

The Women’s Center works to foster an environment that empowers women by highlighting gender-related topics impacting the USD community. Professional and student staff is available to provide support and advocate for the needs of pregnant and parenting students. The Center offers a quiet lounge space, various programs and discussion groups. The Center offers a Mother’s Room for nursing, lounge space, various programs and discussion groups.


Academic Resources
Preparing for and taking care of your child will, at some point, impact your experience in the classroom.  The university recommends that you discuss your individual circumstances with your professors and work with them individually to accommodate doctors’ appointments, absences, and pregnancy leave. If you need further support, a contact person has been identified in the college and professional schools to assist you in addressing your concerns about maintaining and/or adjusting your class schedule.
