Torero Days Parent Orientation

New students will move into campus housing on August 30, 2008!

The 2008 Move In Day for freshman and transfer students is Saturday, August 30. The Office of Parent Relations and parent volunteers partner with Student Affairs and the Torero Days orientation program to ease the transition to campus for new students and their parents. Torero Days Parent Orientation will be Saturday, August 30 and during the morning of Sunday, August 31. Informational sessions and workshops will be provided specifically for parents and families of new USD students. The parent portion of the weekend will conclude mid-day on Sunday with a special family liturgy, scheduled to end around noon.  Please plan to join us!

August 29 - Torero Kickoff Tailgate and Football Game

Tickets for the pre-game dinner and football game are available for purchase online only. (We apologize for the delay in this function becoming available.)  CLICK HERE to purchase tickets. Be sure to complete the order form and continue on to the payment screen to complete and confirm your purchase. All tickets will be avaialble for pick up at the tailgate entry on August 29.

Pre-purchased tickets will be included in the student's check in materials on Saturday, August 30.

Students who live off-campus have the opportunity to stay in the residence halls for a portion of the Torero Days schedule, and this must be arranged in advance.  Contact the Torero Days office at (619) 260-4590 for more information.

Registration is not required to attend the Parent Orientation events, but tickets

The bookstore and convenience store are located in Loma Hall.

One Stop Student Center
Located on the lower level of the Hahn University Center. The One Stop Student
Center includes representatives from Student Accounts, the Office of Financial
Aid and the Registrar.

The First Year Experience: How Students Will Navigate the First Year
Hahn University Center, Forum A/B
Learn about the programs new freshmen will encounter during their first
year and get an overview of academics and academic support at USD.
Participants include James Gump, Ph.D., professor of history and director
of the preceptorial program, Merrick Marino, assistant dean for student
learning initiatives, Dayanne Izmirian, Ph.D., assistant dean for residential
life, and Marie Minnick, assistant dean of students and director of Torero
Days Orientation.

Taking Care of Business
Manchester Executive Conference Center, Auditorium
Learn how to assist your student with USD financial responsibilities,
including tuition payment deadlines, billing statements and activity, granting
parents online access and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act.
Also, a representative from the Office of Financial Aid will discuss common
parent questions, including: How does financial aid get applied to my
student’s bill? How does financial aid continue from year to year?

The Student ID is Key

What are the key ingredients to enjoy dining on campus? Learn about: how
the meal plan, CampusCash and ID card work, where students may eat on
campus, dietary information and campus banking options. Every attendee
will be entered to win a care package door prize!

The College Transition — What Parents and Families Can Expect

What should you and your family expect during the first semester of college?
The university’s wellness team will present information about adjustment to
college, typical transitions issues, how families can best support their student,
along with campus resources and services available to students.

Commuter students are invited to stay in residence halls until Monday morning,
Sept. 1. Contact the Torero Days office at (619) 260-4590 for information about
reserving a space. Check-in is at the Alcalá Vista Apartments, Palomar Desk.

Staying Safe In College: The Power of Parents
Maher Hall, Solomon Lecture Hall
An open dialogue with Student Wellness and the Department of Public
Safety, this session will address the important role of parents in helping
their students make good choices regarding personal safety. USD resources,
campus emergency procedures, off-campus safety, alcohol and other drug
use, travel to Mexico, and other topics will be discussed.

This dinner is complimentary and intended for students who are the first in
their family to be attending college. Students and their families are invited
to meet representatives from the United Front Multicultural Center, the
Educational Opportunity Program and TRIO – Student Support Services. For

New Student and Family Barbecue
4:30–6:30 p.m.

Join your daughter or son, USD faculty and other USD families for a
barbecue dinner. To purchase advanced sale discounted tickets, go to
www.sandiego.edu/parents between July 14 and Aug. 15. All guests
(parents, siblings, etc.) will need to purchase tickets. Tickets are not
required for new students as it is the first meal of Torero Days. Their Torero
Days name tag serves as their ticket. Refer to enclosed flier for additional
details and instructions for purchasing tickets. Advance tickets must be
purchased by Aug. 15.


Barbecue Details: All residents of Maher Hall, Camino Hall, Founders Hall
and the University Terrace Apartments will be served at the Plaza de San
Diego (in front of Maher Hall). All residents of Missions A, Missions B, San
Antonio de Padua, Alcalá Vista Apartments and Manchester Village, as well
as all commuter students (including those staying on campus during Torero
Days), will be served at Eagan Plaza (in front of the Jenny Craig Pavilion).

If you decide to eat off campus, please be aware that the first program your
son or daughter is expected to attend for Torero Days begins at 7 p.m.

5–6:30 p.m.

International Student and Family Dinner
Hahn University Center, Faculty/Staff Dining Room
Join the International T-Squad team and staff from the Office of International
Students and Scholars for a dinner welcoming all new international students and
their families. Meet current USD international students and faculty and learn
about resources and activities available. To sign up and for more information,

President’s Welcome for New Students
Jenny Craig Pavilion
Parents may attend this event, the president’s welcome for new students.
Following the president’s welcome, new students will attend mandatory events,
as noted on the Torero Days schedule.

8–9 p.m.
Parent Dessert Reception
Degheri Alumni Center
Visit with members of the Parents Association Board and other new parents.
Enjoy dessert and beverages, share stories of your day and ask any remaining
questions. Students will be in a Torero Days activity, so this event is designed for
parents and families!

This session is a combination of two sessions from Saturday. Please see

Leadership and Involvement at USD

The University of San Diego offers numerous opportunities for students to
develop their leadership capacities through involvement in campus life. A
panel of students will describe options and share personal experiences.

Mass for Parents and Students

A very special liturgy welcomes new students and parents into the USD
community. Persons of all denominations are welcome and encouraged to attend.
This is the final parent orientation event. Thank you for attending! The student
Torero Days schedule continues with lunch for the students beginning at noon.
