Sustainability: Highlights, 2007-08

Last night at her annual holiday party, Assemblywoman Lori Saldana presented USD with an award and certificate recognizing the University for its efforts to achieve a more sustainable community.  There were three categories: an individual, business, and nonprofit.

This distinction acknowledges the efforts to date by the University to collect and recycle regular and mixed-paper, cardboard, plastics, aluminum, electronic waste, and old furniture, as well as batteries, ink cartridges, florescent lights, antifreeze, oil and cooking grease, in addition to about 90% of cut vegetation gathered from around campus and processed into mulch at the city landfill.

The honor also recognizes the University's endeavor to improve on these accomplishments through the establishment of the Sustainability/Climate Change Program Task Force and the development of a strategic plan.  The Assemblywoman is also mentioned she is interested to meet with Professor Boudrias to learn more about the work of USD's Marine Science & Environmental Studies department.
