Spring Semester
  • Friday, April 20, 4:00-5:30 pm – "Political History of Catholic Social Thought," a discussion led by Patrick Drinan and Virginia Lewis, Professors of Political Science, to trace the origins of CST. Reception begins in the Mother Rosalie Hill Reading Room, Copley Library, at 4:00, followed by discussion from 4:30-5:30. (video).
  • Thursday, March 1, 12:30-1:45 pm and 7:00 pm – "Work as Vocation: Does Catholic Social Thought Work at Work?" by University of St. Thomas theology professor Michael Naughton. Noon lecture in University Center Forum A and evening lecture in Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice Theatre. This set of slides outlines the framework of his presentation and contains wonderful quotations. Testimonials from students attending the presentation illustrate the impact of his message.
  • December 11 - February 4 – The exhibit Dorothy Day and The Catholic Worker is on display at Copley Library. An outspoken proponent of social justice, an ardent pacifist, and a devout Catholic, Dorothy Day's spirit and message continues to resonate today. This exhibit highlights the library's collection of books by and about Dorothy Day and the Catholic Worker Movement as well as recent issues of The Catholic Worker, which she founded with Peter Maurin in 1933.
Fall Semester
  • November 13-17 – Social Issues Week. This year's theme is "Walking Together: Paths to Peace, Justice and Global Solidarity."
    • Monday, November 13, 5:30-6:30 pm – "California Indians Struggling for Human Rights"; presented by local American high school students with assistance from USD, SDSU, and Mesa College; Salomon Hall.
    • Tuesday, November 14
      • 12:00-2:00 pm – At the International Fair, "Painting Peace Murals" and "Painting Shoes for Africans with AIDS"; Front of the University Center.
      • 7:00-9:00 pm – "War on Terrorism—War of Fear?" Signs of the Times Dialogue panel discussion sponsored by the Center for Christian Spirituality; University Center Forum.
    • Wednesday, November 15, 6:00-8:00 pm – Yen Le Espiritu, Fourth Annual Labovitz Lecture; University Center Forum.
    • Thursday, November 16
      • 9:15-10:30 am – Session I Workshops: "Immigration and Activism" and "Mondragón Cooperative Corporation: Practical Application of Catholic Social Thought" by Dr. David Herrera; University Center.
      • 10:45 am - 12:00 pm – Session II Workshops: "Filipino Immigrants: Stories of Hope and Survival" and "The Fight Against AIDS: What Is Being Done in Post-conflict Liberia, What You Can Do at Home"; University Center.

      • 7:00-8:30 pm – IPJ Film Series: The Invisible Mexicans of Deer Canyon. Award-winning filmmaker and USD alumnus John Carlos Frey exposes the harsh realities of life for thousands of day laborers in Southern California; Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice Theatre.
    • Friday, November 17
      • 12:00-1:00 pm – Brown Bag Discussion: Catholic Social Teaching, Our Best Kept Secret by Edward P. Deberri and James E. Hug; discussion led by Larry Gardepie; Degheri Center Boardroom.
      • 4:00-6:00 pm – Book Discussion: Catholic Social Teaching, Our Best Kept Secret by Edward P. Deberri and James E. Hug; discussion led by Fr. Ron Pachence and Dr. Florence Gillman; Copley Library Reading Room. Refreshments provided.
  • Monday, October 30, 7:00 pm – First Annual Lecture on Latino/a Religion by Prof. Gustavo Gutierrez, of the University of Notre Dame. Prof. Virgilio Elizondo, also of the University of Notre Dame, and Prof. Justo Gonzalez, of Emory University (emeritus), presented major responses to Gutierrez's lecture. Shiley Theater.
