About USD

Mission Statement:  The University of San Diego is a Roman Catholic institution committed to advancing academic excellence, expanding liberal and professional knowledge, creating a diverse and inclusive community, and preparing leaders dedicated to ethical conduct and compassionate service.

Core Values:  Academic Excellence, Knowledge, Community, Ethical Conduct, Compassionate Service

The University of San Diego is a dynamic independent Catholic institution of higher learning located on 180 acres overlooking the city’s Mission Bay.  The university enrolls more than 6,600 students in its six schools – Business Administration, Leadership and Education Studies, Law, Nursing, Peace Studies and the College of Arts and Sciences.

The university traces it beginnings to the efforts of San Diego Bishop Charles F. Buddy and Reverend Mother Rosalie Hill, RSCJ.  Through their efforts, USD’s predecessor institutions were established at the university’s present location – the College for Women in 1952 and the College for Men and the School of Law in 1954.  The two institutions merged to become the University of San Diego in 1972.

Throughout its history the University of San Diego has remained committed to the ideals of liberal education, which emphasize the potential of men and women as human beings and as creatures of God.  As a Catholic institution, USD is committed to examination of the Catholic tradition as the basis of a continuing search for meaning in contemporary life.

Known for its personalized approach to educating students, the University of San Diego extends its personal approach to its employees as well.
