The Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice occupies the southwest bluff of the campus and as such anchors that end of the academic core buildings. The exterior of the Institute gives definition to two large plazas. The first is an entry plaza and fountain placed in such a manner as to provide a formal entry to the Institute as well as a strong visual and physical connection to adjacent buildings. This front plaza also provides an opportunity for expansive outside University functions such as receptions and dinners. The second plaza is smaller and more informal. Located at the back of the Institute, it still provides a quality area for receptions and gatherings taking advantage of the 180 degree view of Mission Bay and San Diego Harbor. The 92,000 gross square structure consists of two levels of academic and administration space. It features a large formal entry rotunda, an auditorium for three hundred, multi-purpose rooms for conferencing and dining, a large executive conference room, facilities for the Institute of Peace and Justice, eight state of the art classrooms and administrative offices for the departments of history and political science. The facility also provides a badly needed food service component serving not only the Institute but also the buildings in the west end of the academic core. The structure is situated over two levels of underground parking for approximately 230 cars.
