Founder's Chapel
Located in Founder's Hall
Founders Chapel originally served the San Diego College of Women as its place of worship. It now serves the University of San Diego family in that capacity. The Chapel is approached modestly through Founders Hall quad and entered through a compressed single story narthex which transitions dramatically to a two-story nave and sanctuary. The equivalent first space of the nave is surrounded by dark mahogany millwork including built-in antiphonal seating. Crowning this and describing a second story is a progression of stained glass windows. The sanctuary presence is punctuated by a white marble altar, which is back dropped spectacularly by a gold leafed reredos. While the materials are significant in their own right, the overal sense of the Chapel is one of great sanctity and intimacy.
