The Code of Conduct
In November 1999 the Division of Finance and Administration developed a set of guiding principles of duty and virtue which describe how we shall conduct ourselves as representatives of the university and set the basis for how our performance will be evaluated, as members of a Catholic community dedicated to the practice of business. In the business context, the Code refers to the adherence to laws, rules and policies and the moral principles of trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, fairness and social awareness.
TRUSTWORTHINESS
The quality or state of being worthy of confidence.
- Honesty
Fairness and straightforwardness of conduct, adherence to the facts, sincerity.
- Integrity
Comes from the Latin root integer or a sense of wholeness, completeness. A person who is confident that they are living rightfully.
- Promise Keeping
People who keep their word and honor their commitments.
Interpreting Trustworthiness
Honesty develops trust and supports open communication. I will act in a truthful and sincere manner. I will exemplify responsibility, trust, accountability, and respect, emphasizing commitment to the truth, justice, equality, and high moral and ethical standards.
RESPECT
Courtesy, autonomy, dignity, diversity, inclusiveness.
- Dignity
Treating each person through the practice of courtesy, understanding of differences, and recognizing contributions.
- Autonomy
Honoring self-determination, liberty and the freedom of others.
- Caring
To be genuinely concerned with the well-being of others.
Interpreting Respect
I will conduct myself in a manner that values others and invites mutual respect in return. I will treat each person with courtesy, compassion, and civility, regardless of their position. I will recognize and respect individual differences and contributions.
RESPONSIBILITY
Duty, courage, pursuit of excellence, and the quality or state of being liable to be called on to answer for my actions (accountability).
Interpreting Responsibility
I will accept accountability for my actions and choices and accept challenges with firmness of commitment.
FAIRNESS
Equity, equality, impartiality, proportionality, due process, openness, and consistency.
Interpreting Fairness
My choices and decisions will be based on consideration of all circumstances and will integrate consistency of thought, words and actions.
SOCIAL AWARENESS
Law-based moral obligations to other people and our society.
Interpreting Social Awareness
I will follow the intent of the laws and policies. Additionally, I will find ways, best suited to my interests, to assist my community.
