Leadership Academy Programs
The Department of Human Resources has created a Leadership Academy that includes multiple program options to promote leadership and supervisory skills for university employees. At this time we offer two different programs: “Foundations of Leadership” and “Supervisor Essentials”. These are cohort programs that focus on developing leadership and supervisor competencies to help high potential employees demonstrate success in their roles. See below for more detailed descriptions of both programs. Additional programs within the Leadership Academy will be developed and released in the future.
Foundations of Leadership
The Foundations of Leadership program is designed for staff supervisors, managers who are new to supervisory roles and other staff employees who want to prepare for future supervisory positions at the university. The curriculum focuses on key competencies that individuals would need to develop in order to be successful in a supervisory role on campus. The program meets twice a month for six months to explore concepts and is highly interactive. Participants participate in additional activities to help them shift perspective from a supervised employee to a supervisor. Participants must commit to attend each session.
Program topics include:
- Understanding Communication Styles
- USD’s Mission, Values, Goals and Policies
- Creative Problem Solving
- Perspective Shifting and Strategic Thinking
- Keys to Managing Employee Performance
- Time Management Strategies for Supervisors
- Understanding Leadership Within Your Current Role
If you would like to nominate someone (or yourself) to participate in this program, or would like more information, please contact Janice Evelyn at jevelyn@sandiego.edu or at ext. 2722.
Supervisor Essentials Program
The Supervisor Essentials program focuses on the skills every supervisor should master to ensure they are effectively leading their team of employees. This program meets twice a month for six months in a formal session to introduce relevant concepts and strategies for supervisors. The group also meets one time each month for lunch to network and discuss triumphs and challenges. This is meant to build relationships with colleagues, encourage interdepartmental communication, and support individuals as they integrate the concepts of the program into their jobs.
In addition to these meetings, members of this group participate in an online course aligned with program concepts. This online course consists of discussion boards and assignments to ensure that the skills presented are being utilized in the participant’s day to day work.
