USD's Staff and Administrators Recognition Program

Annual Employee Picnic

Employees are one of USD's most valuable assets.  The university recognizes that employees do make a difference.

As a way to express its appreciation, the university holds an annual employee picnic in June for all faculty, staff and administrative employees and their families. The event is filled with entertainment, games, contests and delicious food.  To add to the fun and excitement, the planning committee decides each year on a picnic theme.

The Staff Employee of the Year and the Administrator of the Year are announced and presented with awards at this event.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Question - How are years of service calculated for Service Awards?

Answer - Anniversary dates are calculated based on an employee's continuous service as a regular status employee. If an employee has a break in service of more than one month and less than one year and returns as a regular status employee, the employee's anniversary date (for the purpose of service awards) is adjusted by the number of months in the break in service.

Example 1 (previous service was less than 10 years):

Original hire date is September 1, 1999
Separation December 31, 2002
Rehired into another regular status position July 1, 2003
New anniversary date March 1, 2000
The employee’s six month break in service is added to the original hire date

If an employee’s break in service is more than one year, their rehire date will be their anniversary date for the purpose of service awards.  Exception:  If an employee’s previous service was 10+ years, they will receive credit for previous service even if their break in service is more than one year, and their anniversary date is adjusted by the number on months in the break in service.

Example 2 (previous service was 10+ years):

Original hire date is May 1, 1989
Separation December 31, 2002
Rehired into another regular status position June 1, 2007
New anniversary date October 1, 1993
The employee’s break in service (4 years and 5 months) is added to the original hire date
Approved Leave of Absence does not affect the employee's anniversary date and is not considered a break in service.

Question - When do employees receive service recognition?

Answer - Employees who complete the 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35+ years of service in the calendar year are recognized for their service at an annual ceremony during the fall semester.
