Institutional Review Board (IRB)

The Institutional Review Board (formerly the Committee on the Protection of Human Subjects-CPHS) meets monthly, except in August, in order to administer oversight of proposals meeting the criteria for full review. The IRB full review meeting schedule is listed on this website along with a list of IRB members. Principal Investigators (PIs) should note that both exempt review and expedited review proposals are handled on an on-going basis without submission deadlines by the Associate Provost and IRB Administrator, Dr. Thomas R. Herrinton.

All investigators/researchers who will be directly interacting with subjects/participants will need to complete the investigator educational training once per five years. Additionally, faculty who advise graduate students and any research assistants must submit proof that each has successfully completed the human subjects training course. Once the investigator/researcher/advisor completes the educational training, he or she should print out the certificate of completion and submit it, along with other necessary IRB forms, to the Provost's Office, Hughes Administration Center, Room 328, to the attention of the IRB Administrator, Dr. Thomas Herrinton..

In addition to the investigator educational training, it is recommended that investigators watch the Belmont Report Training Video that is available at the Office of Human Research Protections' (OHRP) website. This is not a required step for investigators, but rather an informational tool to be used at the discretion of the investigator.

The IRB has created a Guidelines for Submission Procedures document available as a MS Word file in order to anticipate answers to common FAQ's related to the submission process. The Board encourages all PIs to print and review this file. The Board has developed a Sample Application for New Proposals, which includes a sample consent form, to serve as a guide for completing this form for submission. Additionally, the Board is constructing a FAQ page. Please look for that addition to our website in the near future.
