A USD Partnership School
SOLES maintains an active partnership with Keiller Leadership Academy (KLA), a grades 6-8 charter school in San Diego City Schools. This partnership includes support for board development, professional development for teachers, and development of a comprehensive system of student and family support. Dean Paula Cordeiro, Dr. Lea Hubbard, and Dr. Alberto Pulido all serve as members of Keiller’s Advisory Board. In addition, numerous SOLES and USD faculty, staff and students participate in a variety of projects. Other areas of emphasis in the SOLES-KLA partnership include:
- Professional development for KLA teachers in the areas of standards-based, data-driven curricular design, research-based instructional techniques that reflect student needs, and opportunities for the teachers’ own continued adult learning.
- Providing USD students to serve as tutors and mentors in several areas including math, science, and humanities.
- Organizing field trips and visits to USD to encourage KLA students to look ahead to college and to help them understand the links between academic skill development in middle and high school and post-secondary opportunities.
