SOLES Nonproft Success Story Continued

Jilian JepsenAfter a little research I was pleasantly surprised to find that since I worked for a 501 (c) 3, I qualified for a substantial scholarship. This generous donation would reduce my total tuition to $13,000! I immediately approached the Museum's executive director with my interest in the program and she generously pledged the Museum's support - emotionally and financially. I knew then that I could make it work.

After working three years at the Museum of Making Music, it is clear that our staff and supporters are ready to move the Museum to the next level. As a boutique museum in North San Diego County, our goal is to become a cultural gem of Southern California. Through its balance of nonprofit fundamentals and leadership training, USD's nonprofit program will equip me to help improve my organization. The nonprofit Leadership and Management Program will give me the building blocks to get started and the confidence to make lasting change.

I am wrapping up my first year in the program and can already see the impact the program is having on the nonprofit I work for. Since much of the curriculum is practice based, I have worked on a number of applied projects for the Museum. We went through many governance changes last year, which inspired me to develop an Advisory Board Manual as my project for Board Leadership. This manual was subsequently unanimously approved by the board and quickly put to practice as a guidebook and recruiting tool. I look forward to working on more projects for the Museum and to continuing to see the difference this valuable work makes.

The Nonprofit Leadership and Management Program is full of amazing people and I am so lucky to be part of this brilliant group. It is remarkable how many great ideas come from a casual conversation on the way to class. I am surrounded by people who believe in the possibility of major change and this passion creates a rich learning environment. Working on projects with students from all areas of the sector has opened my eyes to the tremendous diversity in San Diego. I have made valuable connections and wonderful friends.

Overall, the Nonprofit Leadership and Management Program has made me a better thinker. I have always loved to learn but while previously I mostly absorbed information, I now engage it in a more meaningful way. I have started to question norms, searching for the deeper causes of problems rather than the quick fix. This priceless gift will not only help me in my work with the Museum, it will evolve me into a person who can orchestrate change on a larger scale.
