Department of Learning & Teaching
The Department of Learning and Teaching faculty offer master's level course work leading to the Master of Education and the Master of Arts in Teaching degrees, and coordinates with the College of Arts and Sciences to offer undergraduate students a program of study that prepares them for Preliminary Multiple Subject or Single Subject and Special Education credentials as they complete their undergraduate degrees. Students seeking the M.Ed. in Language, Literacy and Culture can also earn a certificate in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages (TESOL).

Students may also earn the MAT and a Single Subject Credential in History/Social Science.
In the State of California, those interested in teaching first earn a Preliminary Multiple Subject (elementary) or Single Subject (middle school and high school) credential. Through additional study, experience teaching in their own classrooms, and support programs offered through school districts, teachers then earn the Professional Clear Credential. Each of the degree programs in the Department of Learning and Teaching offers courses that meet the requirements of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing for the Professional Clear Multiple or Single Subject Teaching Credentials.
In addition, credential-only programs are available which prepare candidates for the Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential, the Preliminary Multiple Subject Credential with a Bilingual emphasis, the Preliminary Single Subject credential, and Level I and II Education Specialist Credentials in Early Childhood Special Education, Mild Moderate Disabilities, and Moderate/Severe Disabilities.
