Kathy McCarthy, MSN, RN, CNM, NCC, is a Clinical Assistant Professor and the Director of the Simulation and Standardized Patient Nursing Laboratory. Professor McCarthy is a Certified Nurse Midwife and a Certified Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, with an MSN degree from Vanderbilt University and a Post-Master’s certificate in Nurse Midwifery from the University of California, Irvine.
She has over twenty-three years experience as a Registered Nurse, fifteen years experience as a Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner, and over ten years experience as a Nurse Midwife. Professor McCarthy has managed ambulatory care, practiced as an air ambulance maternal high-risk nurse, a Nurse Practitioner of obstetrics and gynecology, a Nurse Midwife, and a Director of a women’s health program. She also has been an instructor of maternal-child nursing.
Professor McCarthy has received substantial grants for an obstetrical access project from the United Way and also from the city of Las Vegas. She has published in the Journal of Obstetrics, Gynecologic, and Neonatal Nursing and has been a contributor to May and Mahlmeister’s, Comprehensive Maternity Nursing: Nursing Process and the Childbearing Family.
Professor McCarthy maintains her Nurse Midwifery practice at the La Maestra Family Clinic in San Diego where she provides services to an underserved vulnerable population. She also is a volunteer for the California Red Cross.
