Dr. Kathy James received a DNSc and MSN from the University of San Diego and is a certified Family and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioner. Dr. James volunteers at Linda Vista Community Clinic, owns three weight clinics run by advanced practice nurses, and does health promotion research. In 2012, she was inducted as a Fellow of the American Academy of Nurses in Washington, DC. Her expertise has advanced the care of families in obesity prevention/intervention through workshops for hundreds of nurses, physicians, and allied health professionals globally. Through community and interdisciplinary partnerships, her work has led to the implementation of a nationally recognized program “Ways to Enhance Children’s Activity and Nutrition” (WECAN) in an underserved, ethnically diverse population in San Diego, CA. This project dramatically decreases health disparities by improving access to weight management strategies, demonstrating long term effectiveness in preventing childhood obesity in minority and low income families; and provides empirical evidence for promotion of this program globally.
Dr. James is active in statewide and national task forces which develop tool kits to educate health professionals and speaks to audiences of all ages at local, national and international conferences. Dr. James doesn't just write or talk about obesity; she experienced it firsthand, losing sixty pounds twenty years ago. She's kept the weight off using the practical and informative tips she shares in this book.
