“Inspiring Social Change through Education” Is This Year’s Theme

Cardinal Theodore E. McCarrick will speak at the University of San Diego’s 19th annual Social Issues Conference. This year’s conference “Inspiring Social Change through Education” takes place from Oct. 2 – 14 and will bring members of the San Diego community together to build awareness about critical social issues including the 2008 election, immigration and youth engagement.
 
McCarrick was the fifth Cardinal Archbishop of the Washington, D.C. Diocese from 2001-2006. In 2007, he became a counselor at the D.C.-based Center for Strategic and International Studies. He will give his talk, “Reflections on Justice for Immigrants” on Monday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m. in USD’s Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice.
 
Other conference speakers include Tony Campolo, founder of the Evangelical Association for the Promotion of Education, an organization that develops schools and social programs in third world countries and cities across North America. He is the author of 35 books including “Red Letter Christians, A Citizen’s Guide to Faith and Politics.” Campolo will speak on Thursday, Oct. 9 at noon in USD’s Hahn University Center Forum.

“Signs of the Times: Elections 2008,” a panel discussion and reflection on the values articulated by Catholic Social Teaching on Thursday, Oct. 2 at 7 p.m.

“We Are the Ones: Student Strategies for Community Organizing,” an interactive workshop addressing issues facing students on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 10:45 a.m.

“In Our Own Voice: The Chicano/Latino Struggle for the Education of La Raza,” a panel examining the struggle for Chicano/a studies in the San Diego region on Thursday, Oct. 9 at 10:45 a.m.

“On Both Sides: A Borderless Night of Artistic Activism,” with a band of musicians, a photographer, a painter and an actor collaborating in a stunning event combining words, music and images. “On Both Sides” takes place Friday, Oct. 10 at 6 p.m. in USD’s Hahn University Center Forum.
