Founded in 1949 in the heart of San Diego, USD has grown to become a premier institution dedicated to providing academic excellence, Catholic intellectual and social traditions, and a top-notch liberal arts education for scholars of all faiths. USD is committed to the intellectual, spiritual, and overall development of its student body.

Even to the casual eye, it's apparent that the campus runs like a well-oiled machine, in large part due to our hard working team members, all dedicated to making sure that the USD student experience is reflective of the distinctive quality that the university is known for.

More than 1500 full-time and 750 part-time employees worked at USD in 2011, in capacities ranging from faculty to food service to administration to groundskeeper.

Text	Elementary Students to Participate in 16^th Annual Walk on Water Competition The University of San Diego holds its 16^th annual Walk on Water Competition this Saturday, April 21. The event takes place from 10:30 to 11:45 a.m. at the University’s Sports Center, located 200 yards east of the main USD entrance at the top of Linda Vista Road. This year several teams of elementary school students are expected to join high school and college students in using wood, Styrofoam and fiberglass, and lots of duct tape, to design and construct self-propelled buoyancy “shoes” to defy the laws of gravity and race across the pool. Prizes will be awarded to the teams with the fastest times. This fun event teaches students basic scientific and engineering design principles and is held every year to promote the field of engineering and its importance to society. USD’s engineering program is tied for 29^th in the country among engineering programs where the highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s, according to U.S. News & World Report. The public also is invited to view the event at no charge. It’s a chance for children to see science and engineering in action. The University of San Diego is a Catholic institution of higher learning chartered in 1949; the school enrolls approximately 7,500 students and is known for its commitment to teaching, the liberal arts, the formation of values and community service. The establishment of the Joan B. Kroc School of Peace Studies will bring the University’s total number of schools and colleges to six. Other academic divisions include the College of Arts and Sciences and the schools of Business Administration, Education, Law and Nursing and Health Sciences. ###
