San Diego, CA -- The University of San Diego’s Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice will present the films “Honor Diaries,” “Eyes Wide Open: This Is Media” and “Circles” as a part of the peaceXpiece Film Series March 4-6, 2014 in the Peace and Justice Theatre. All films will be followed by a panel discussion.
Honor Diaries (March 4) – This film features nine women’s rights advocates with connections to Muslim-majority societies who are engaged in dialogue about gender inequality. Freedom of movement, the right to education, forced marriage and female genital mutilation are some of the systematic abuses explored in depth. Discussion to follow moderated by Jennifer Freeman, IPJ Program Officer, and featuring Imam Taha Hassane, USD Associate Professor Bahar Davary, and film producer Alex Traiman. “Honor Diaries” is hosted by Nika Water and co-sponsored by USD's Women's Center.
Eyes Wide Open: This Is Media (March 5) – This screening is one of 15 nationwide to premiere this documentary, which is a fresh look at our role in today's media landscape as consumers and makers. The film reveals the balancing act between being connected, responsible and maintaining privacy. Discussion to follow featuring Mary Walter-Brown of Voice of San Diego, Alisa Barba of Fronteras, Esteban Del Rio of USD’s Department of Communication Studies, and student Beth Desta from Outside the Lens. “Eyes Wide Open” is presented by WorldLink and hosted by Outside the Lens. Co-sponsored by USD's Dept. of Communication Studies and the Global Journal Project.
Circles (March 6) – This film follows five people who are affected by a tragic heroic act during the wars in the former Yugoslavia. Twenty years later, all must confront the past through their own crises and experience the circles of anger, hatred, reconciliation and forgiveness. Discussion to follow led by IPJ Interim Director Dee Aker, featuring filmmaker Srdan Golubovic. “Circles” is hosted by the Museum of Photographic Arts and Film Forward.
