USD to Inaugurate a New Era in Engineering
Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering Aims for Top 10 in the Nation

The University of San Diego will officially dedicate the new Shiley-Marcos School of Engineering on Thursday, Sept. 26 at 10:30 a.m. in the Joan B. Kroc Institute of Peace & Justice.

Speakers and Interviews include:
USD President Mary E. Lyons
Chell A. Roberts, PhD and Founding Dean of New Engineering School
Darlene Marcos Shiley, San Diego philanthropist whose $20 million gift has made the school possible.

“We envision a school committed to innovation and entrepreneurship that will work closely with San Diego’s high-tech community to contribute to the region’s growth and vitality,” said Roberts, a nationally recognized leader of engineering education.

The goal is to become one of the Top 10 undergraduate engineering schools in the country. USD’s program is currently ranked 22rd in the nation for programs whose highest degree is a bachelor’s or master’s, up three spots from a year ago, by U.S. News & World Report.

“Our goal is ambitious but one we can achieve by developing new facilities for students to invent and design, adding new courses in biotechnology and sustainability and by partnering with industry and government,” said Roberts who was formerly executive dean of the College of Technology and Innovation at Arizona State University.

At ASU, Roberts was the architect and creator of innovative programs including “iProjects,” an award-winning program where student teams developed solutions to challenges offered by businesses from around the world.

Darlene Marcos Shiley said her gift of $20 million to create USD’s new school will honor both her Brazilian heritage and the family of her late husband, Donald P. Shiley, the co-creator of an artificial valve that revolutionized heart surgery. “I would like to be a part of creating people – men and women – who are like my husband,” said Marcos Shiley.

The USD Engineering Department was founded in 1987 with just a handful of students and two faculty. The program has steadily grown in size and stature and today there are approximately 20 faculty and 360 students.

Media are invited to attend the ceremony and should use the west USD entrance on Linda Vista Road, above Morena Blvd. After getting a parking pass from kiosk officer, media should proceed up the hill. At the top of the hill, where the main campus begins, they should turn right around the Peace & Justice Institute into the parking lot behind it. After showing their media I.D., a guard at the lot will direct them to parking spaces reserved for media.
