Simon Croom, executive director of the University of San Diego Supply Chain Management Institute has been awarded one of four fellowships from the Chartered Institute of Purchasing & Supply (CIPS) in the United Kingdom.

The fellowship of 16,000 pounds (equivalent to $32,000) will fund research, education, networking and other activities for two years in the area of corporate social responsibility and sustainability. With more than 40,000 members, CIPS is a global leader in promoting best practices and standards for industry in supply chain management.

“This award is a great recognition of USD’s supply chain institute,” Croom said. “Issues of corporate responsibility and sustainability are at the forefront of challenges facing the corporate and public sectors so I’m very excited to begin this work.”

Supply chain issues are critical to an organization’s efforts to be good corporate citizens and to “go green,” he added. “In my view, an organization’s supply chain – its network of procurement, design, manufacturing and distribution – is the most important tool it has to create social change.”

Croom, who has been director of USD’s institute since 2005, has spent his entire professional career in supply chain management, both as practitioner and as a leading academic researcher. He came to USD from the University of Warwick Business School in the UK and has been an advisor to numerous corporations and the UK government.

USD’s School of Business Administration, which houses the supply chain institute, provides a great foundation for this research, Croom said. Last year the school was ranked in the top 100 of Beyond Grey Pinstripes, a biennial survey looking at how well social and environmental issues are incorporated into the training of future business leaders. USD was ranked 36th.
